Look up square waveguide - you might just as well ask about a round one.

Hello OM's,
Waveguides usually have a rectangular cross-section. This is not really suitable for LNB's with horizontal and vertical polarization. A square or round waveguide, however, already.
But why use a square waveguide (instead of a round), which is certainly more expensive to manufacture?
That was the background of my question!

Hi Peter.
I don't have an answer to why they choose to use a square instead of a circular wave guide.
But I cant see why it would be more expensive to manufacture?
The wave guide seems to be cast alloy so the manufacturing cost would be the same regardless of shape. Maybe it was more convenient to put a flat PCB on top a flat side of the wave guide? -
Hello Peter,
I have one unit here and the LO wobbles a lot. Could you check if you have the same issue with your unit?

Hi all,
yes, the whole LNB body is a die-cast part.
For this purpose, a die casting mold is needed. In the production of this form lathe tooling is cheaper than milling, especially since in addition a transition from the square waveguide to the round grooved horn is required.
So the question of the reason remains ...!

By the way, I don’t test this LNB until now.
