YES, otherwise I had said nothing.
Hi Thomas,
now I hopefully made your day today
We have a WIKI now
Actually it's called Lexicon, but its almost the same and as easy to use!
The good thing is, already registered users of this forum will be able to edit and add information.
Now comes the difficult part:
- a structure
- contents
The basic structure is called "Categories"..
QO-100 is for example is such a "Main-Category" .. and than there can be "Sub-Categories"..
Any ideas?
I haven't yet included the LEXICON in the Menu, not to confuse people too much at this time, as I'm also learning how to best configure it. If I know how to do it, I will also give you Moderator rights etc. so that you can yourself create Categories.. This functionality is not for everyone..
The Lexicon/Wiki is here: https://forum.amsat-dl.org/lexicon/

My first help where to turn the antennas for AO-10/13 was a Sharp Pocket PC with a basic program from Karl Meinzer. Very nice tool!
Actually this program from Karl DJ4ZC was amazingly small and the basis for many BASIC tracking programs from that era..

Hi William!
Welcome and great to see you are still developing cool hardware for amateur satellite projects.. Enjoy!

Are the messages sent with FEC ?
Yes Thomas,
as described on the AMSAT-DL Homepage under NB Transponder Bandplan and Guidelines...
- The Middle Beacon is modulated in 400 bit/s BPSK (similar to the P3-satellites).
See also the provided link...

Hi Georg,
I don't think so.. AO40RCV is probably still the only choice.
Indeed the decoded TLM screens have to be completely ignored on QO-100, as there is no telemetry from the satellite available. AO40RCV was for decoding P3-D / OSCAR-40.
There are currently some activities ongoing to add some more information to it, but it slowed down and may or may not be implemented..
Interestingly, there is a Telemetry Dashboard here: https://dashboard.satnogs.org/…k/eshail-2-qo-100?orgId=1

If you build a Wiki... [...] Such a Wiki needs many experienced OM's who are willing to bring in there knowledge.
Yes Thomas, but that's what I said above...
Not meant personally, but..:
Are YOU willing to administrate and maintain such a Wiki? Are YOU the experienced OM willing to bring in YOUR knowledge?
-
Yes - or go directly to the https://amsat-dl.org original homepage.
All documents and presentations are here since the launch of QO-100. They are in English or bi-lingual in English and German.
We are trying to keep the page up-to-date. It maybe not perfect, but it's also a lot of work.. we are volunteers and those are the things mostly one person is taking care (me!)... because no other wants to do it either.. I do like Wikis as well, but Wikis are coming and going as well or links just get obsolete and you search again..
Maybe we need to write a book.. a "A QO-100 Users Manual" made of several chapters.. from the (true) History to the (true) details about the hardware on-board Es'hail-2, link budget, antennas, ground equipment, hardware, software, different solutions, etc...
Such books were very popular some decades ago, during the P3 era when Internet was not existing.. Maybe nowadays for authors its not more that attractive to invest big amount of time.. I don't know..
My feeling is, we are in the age of unlimited access to information, but people are even not willing to search them-self or even research how valid and trust-able that information is.. And than we are in the age of self-portrayal, where everyone likes to create his own page, his own wiki, his own Instagram, etc..
Less and less people are willing to contribute to the community.. I'm sure, if we create a Wiki page on our home page.. it will be again only very few people contributing and even less people crawling through it. Because finding information on a Wiki also requires some kind of research by the person himself...
I have not given up the idea of a QO-100 book, but than someone also urged me to write my personal "Memoires of AMSAT.." (which I also haven't started yet)

...in the old times of AO-13, 10 and 40 this discussion was practically nonexistent and everybody was happy.
absolutely agree.. and we were not complaining about Doppler shift, propagation delays, full-duplex operation, rules and operating guidelines, etc...
QO-100 is indeed the "easy satellite" and we have a lot of newcomers on the satellites too, which is good!
Some of them just need a "good cop" who is able to explain to them what's needed to become a "good satellite user".
Stay Calm and Listen: Everyone has to be open for comments, even criticism in a friendly way as well.. Unfortunately some operators take it as pure critics or simply ignore. Both sides need to be open and friendly...
But I would also expect that new users shall try to educate them-self by reading trust-able and reliable sources first.

Hi,
I asked Kurt DJ0ABR and he replied:
"what Jonas writes sounds like the PLL on the GPS module is not locked.
I've seen something like that myself when the GPS signal was weak, but after 2 seconds the PLL was locked again.
What is also important to know, how many GPS SATs does he receive at all.
Most people don't know this because they don't have a display, but this information is also available on the serial port."
I it doesn't help, please send an eMail to our office...

Hi Jens,
maybe this is could also be somehow helpful for you: https://github.com/ok1cdj/FT817-satmode
Indeed not for the beacon synchronization, but perhaps for the CAT control..
FT817-satmode
SAT mode emulation for 2x FT817 and Arduino NANO
Uses modified FT817 CAT library
2 SW serials are set to 9600, HW serial is free for easy debug
Short press off button enable / disable tracking
Long press invert mode
Master radio - 2 RX, 3 TX
Slave radio - 4 RX, 5 TX
Button is connected to PIN 6

Hi Nick,
welcome to the Forum here..
Sure.. I hope it will help you to make more contacts...
I have changed the title a little bit..
Nice photo from your SOTA activity too!!
best regards
Peter

Jens DH6BB cut and edited our super long live video from the AMSAT-DL 2020 Online Symposium and I have started uploading the first parts to our YouTube Playlist.
More videos will follow in the next days.. so stay tuned!

Thanks Thomas, later this week or so we will also cut and edit the videos and upload each lecture to YouTube for better "viewer experience"

Ein paar kleine Änderungen im Vortragsprogramm, siehe oben...

Hi Mike and Karen,
sure you can use a second transceiver or separate monitoring receiver, but than it makes the IC-705 no more special compared to others.. at least not at as satellite transceiver. Indeed, it's still a nice portable device and if you own two of them still no too heavy.
Maybe we'll have to wait a little longer, surely ICOM didn't want to have a direct competitor to its own IC-9700. But a smaller/lighter portable version of the IC-9700 would be very interesting for many QO-100 users, but also especially for friends of the LEO satellites., no need for 50/100W Output on satellites..

Hi Peter,
it is just a simplex transceiver, but i always use the same QRG stabilized by GPS for TX and RX, so there is no need for a satellite mode.
The waterfall display for transmission check can be achieved by the WEB-SDR or with a tablet with the SDR-Console / RTL-Stick which i have built in at my transverter.

Hi Mike,
I know and trust that you are an experienced person and you know what you are doing.. no problem..
I was not only thinking about QO-100, but also about portable QO-100 and LEO satellite operation..
Conclusion: The ICOM IC-705 is definitely NOT READY for Satellites...
So in this case the IC-705 is nothing special or new... it's a step back, in particular if you don't want to carry another computer with an SDR...
The other point is about simplex operation:
We have discussed this here and elsewhere many times and the ignorance to rules given by the QO-100 Transponder Bandplan and Guidelines is sometimes disappointing. In "portable" operation it does not help at all, if you don't have internet... and to completely depend on an internet connection to a WebSDR, is not what I think is good practice. It's OK when you are just starting to get up on QO-100, but it should not become a standard and it should not be promoted as a good solution..
On AO-40 the time delay was twice as much compared to QO-100 because of 60.000km apogee
Sorry, I have taken the liberty of modifying the title a little bit

very cool for portable satellite operation, but is it full-duplex capable, i.e. does it have a satellite mode??
