Hallo Charly,

UG-570:
The AD9361 Rx and Tx RFPLLs use the DCXO or external clock as their reference clock as well. For this reason, it is extremely critical that the crystal or clock source have very low phase noise. The recommended phase noise specification is shown in Figure 2.

Hi Sandro,
I've just got the data sheet of the RTL203004. It is a TCXO with 3.3 V supply voltage.

Hi Sandro,
AD recommends 80 MHZ (2 x 40 MHz), but I don't know the influence of the frequency. Important is the quality of the transmitting signal, I think with a 40 MHz OCXO there will be no difference to the internal clock. When your signal is ok then you have no problems.

Hi Sandro,
I suppose you can't reach the recommended phase noise values with a clock multiplier. I am waiting for a 40 MHz OCXO (KVG RTL203004) from eBay.

Hi Syed,
I bought another 40 MHz OCXO from Ebay, Aliexpress offers it too: RTL203004. I will try to compare both oscillators, but my spectrum analyzer seems to be too old for such measurements.

Hi Ron,
that is the value for the 10MHz output!
Perhaps we can have a more exact measurement.
Best regards,

Hi Ron,
many thanks. That is nearly the same result as Karen has described in his article.

Hi,
has someone experience with the phase noise of the Leo Bodnar GPSDO at 25 and 40 MHz?
Best regards,

Hi Muhammad,
this module can deliver 40 MHz, you have to use "4X". The output level should be reduced with a 3dB attenuator.
Here you find the code for external clock: https://wiki.analog.com/university/tools/pluto/devs/booting
But when you intend to receive only, you can synchronize SDR console with the middle beacon. I use a LNB with crystal oscillator, not stabilized, and it works fine.
Best regards,

Hallo Kurt,
AD empfiehlt eine ext. Clock von 40 MHz x 2.

AD empfiehlt eine 80 MHz clock, z. B. 40 MHz x 2 im UG-570:
REFERENCE CLOCK SETUP AND OPERATION
If the DCXO is not used, an external reference clock needs to be ac-coupled to XTALN (Pin M12). XTALP (Pin M11) is not connected (leave floating). The clock frequency must be between 5 MHz and 320 MHz, and can be scaled by 1×, ½×, ¼× and 2× using BBPLL, Rx and Tx reference dividers. The valid frequency range for the RFPLL phase detectors is 10 MHz to 80 MHz, and the scaled frequency of the reference clock must be within this range. For optimum phase noise it is recommended to operate the scaled clock as close to 80 MHz as possible. The selection between DCXO and external reference clock is made in the ad9361_init function.
