Just a question to the experienced SDR freaks..

    https://github.com/pothosware/PothosSDR/wiki/GQRX

Is it worth trying this under Windows or would you rather try it under Linux?

I'm running SDR# under Windows 10 but for some reason it started crashing more often during the last 2 weeks..

I have an Airspy, my Funcube dongle is currently in use on my Raspberry PI 3+ and FOXTLM, but two more 0.5ppm SDR dongles from China are on it's way ;)

As most of you have already noticed, the In-Orbit testing (IOT) of the P4-A ham radio transponders on Es’hail-2 have started.

Like everyone, we are very excited by the received signals so far and we do appreciate any monitoring and receiving reports from the amateur radio community. We are happy to see how much interest and enthusiasm this satellite already created in our community.

    However:

:!:Please be reminded, that under no circumstances Uplink attempts should be done!:!:

Any unsolicited transmissions will delay the commissioning and maybe even worse, might influence our good relation with Es’hailSat during this project.

    Hi Pedro,

Standard ASTRA PLL LNB has LO = 9750 MHz

KUHNE TCXO LNB has LO = 9360 MHz

    10706 MHz - 9360 MHz = 1346 MHz with Kuhne LNB

When you point your dish to 24,2°E you should see a strong beacon with your 1.8m dish right now.

Es'hail-2 will be located in January/February at 26°W, same position as BADR 4/5/6. BADR 4 has a wider beam and can also be received here in Germany.

    Hope this helps.. 73s Peter

    Hi Herbert,

LO and High band is switched using a 22 kHz tone, but that's not required. Without tone the LO = 9750 MHz.

The voltage level is required for the Polarization:

    11...14 Volt = (V)ertical --> NB Transponder

    16...20 Volt = (H)orizontal --> WB Transponder

So for the NB transponder you just apply 13V via Bias-T and that's is it...

    73s Peter

There are no on-board beacon generators on the WB and NB.

The beacons and LEILA will be ground based and up-linked from the Es'hailSat SCC in Qatar. Our groundstation equipment will be installed and activated after the IOT phase is finished.

At the moment all transponder settings (including gain, AGC, ALC, decay and attack, etc.) will be exercised..

That's why we kindly ask not to even think about transmitting on S-band Uplink :!:;)

    a nice XMAS present is'nt it :)

:!:But please no attempt to Uplink ...

What you see is still IOT by Melco to ensure everything is according to specifications and that there will be no negative side effects..

So please don't transmit any Uplink signals, when you see it turned on.. we have to be patient and demonstrate our best reputation..

The signals are back to their initial levels here. Anyone having trouble to receive or identify them should try again... these beacons are 30dB above the noise here when viewed in gqrx.

(I am currently using an 80cm dish and an unmodified StarCom SR-3602 LNB)

Just made the same observations.. around 36dB over the noise here in Hannover.. H and V polarization..

Thank you all for the suggestions and pointers. I am in south India and none of satellites at 23/24/25 have beams covering my location. Even MENA covers only North India. MY friend in New Delhi which is in north India VU2UUU will be trying Badr and Arabsat 5A.

    Hi Nitin,

even here the signals are very faint and I'm not entirely sure if they are from Es'hail-2 or not...

Interestingly I can see some carriers which seem to swap in intensity when I switch between V and H.

Anyway.. don't worry.. this is the MENA spot and this has nothing to do with what we expect from the WB & NB AMSAT transponders. The transponders have there own antenna horn to cover the whole earth hemisphere from Brazil to Thailand...

WB transponder downlink will be (H)orizontal, NB transponder downlink will be (V)ertical polarization.

Reminder: no official activity planned before the new year (i.e. around February 2019) :/

Well my dish is movable from 58w to 53e so no problem at all to receive where it happens to be stationed :)

Same idea over here when I installed the dish in the summer... and it turned out to be a good idea to be able to check what's going on at 24°E before going to 26°E :)

..and who knows what will come after XMAS.. perhaps an Es'hail-3 ? :/;)

    Hi,

I was also able to receive the EB and after some more tweaking this evening with my DiSEqC Motor to 24°E, I've got some nice signal on my 80cm dish with an unmodified Octagon Optima OSLO PLL Single LNB ..

More stable than I thought and for someone who is used to a lot of Doppler shift from the LEO's, this frequency drift is no problem for the beginner (SSB) et all.

It probably needs to be observed how the frequency will be under more severe weather conditions.

(the frequency axis is 5 kHz per line, i.e. 30kHz between the sidebands with the carrier in the middle)

So, don't worry if you haven't modified your LNB yet. I might do that later next year when the weather is better, but that's not urgent.. ;)

    73s Peter

.. and there are definitely no beacons on that frequencies.. the beacons for the AMSAT P4-A transponders are generated on the ground as part of the LEILA-2 system ;)

These a most likely ghost signals at even multiples of internal references. 10450 MHz is integer multiple of 25 MHz.. same is 10500 MHz.

    Dear Christian,

    Thanks for your observations..

Just to make sure.. did you made a sanity check, i.e. did the signal disappear when you moved the antenna a little bit to the left and right?

At which °E Spot do you point the antenna?

    73s Peter

I remember that Michael oh2aue received the EB from Es'hail-1 a while ago from Finland using a 1,20m dish and Funcube dongle..

Since Es'hail-1 does not have a beam to Europe, I would assume the EB is coming from a dedicated more wide beam feed..

Everything else would be under NDA which I signed for AMSAT-DL ;)
