TX-only modification on commercial WiFi booster

Hi,

I wonder if anybody has information on how to modify a commercial WiFi booster to stay in transmit mode, continuously, as mentioned but not described here: https://www.george-smart.co.uk/2019/03/limesdr-edup-pa/ .

First reason this might be needed is because otherwise you might not be able to send in SSB, the second reason is that I do not want to harm the up-converter in any way (do these amplify the received signal, as well?).

EDIT: It seems the modification IS described, indeed. But I'll keep this thread here so we can collect more modifications for other PAs.

Let's see whether my rig (80 cm offset dish with homebrew patch antenna and the up-converter from DX Patrol on it's way) will need some more power or not - I've already seen very simple antennas driven by only 2 watts and less...

here i have a Upconverter vom DX-Patrol to play with. Today i have measured it and see it's unusable without a SAW filter after the output.

IF input was 16dbm from R&S SMG.

Hi.

I can confirm that shorting pins 4+5 together as detailed by George Smart works very well. The amplifier is in TX mode all the time and even though the TX quiescent current is 'always on' it does not cause overheating. - Nice mod. Thank you George.

What would be nice, is if there is some work on improving the matching at 2400. At the QO100 frequency gain is 13dB. Claimed gain in the middle of the Wifi band is 17dB. Would be nice to find another couple of dB and reduce the input drive a little.

Inside is a few ceramic filters 2450MHz 0603 maybe can try to remove it and brick with 0R and measure gain ?

You also could try to remove the input and output switching diodes (not needed anymore when you already modified for TX-only) and solder small pieces of wire instead. I read an article stating this gives you 1.5dB more output.

Thanks, That sounds like a couple of good ideas.
I confess I had not seen the bandpass filters. I thought they were only in the RX chain.
I must look more closely!
Fortunately I have a microscope for SMD....now I just need a steady hand.

David you have right some of the don't have smd filter on TX chain. But there I found filter with PCB trace on rf input.

I mounted a small PC cooler/air condition at the top of the “8 Watt” AMP. I think, after that it works a bit better.

Buy the way, I can confirm that shorting pin 4 and 5 together switch the AMP to TX mode – even the small “4 Watt” Version.

You just have to share your experience with others (i.e. describe a modification, repair, etc) and you get free access.

The systems only works on a bilateral basis.
